INDIANOLA — Canadian used pressure defense and steady offense to open the Pitt 8 Conference tournament with big win.
Carson Thompson has a game-high 29 points as the Cougars ran away with an 84-26 win against Indianola on Monday to in the tournament’s first round.
Thompson hit a deep three and converted a physical layup for an and-one as the Cougars jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the opening period.
Lavonta Clayton later converted a transition layup, Christian Mathis turned a steal into a layup, and Thompson hit a corner three and a euro-step lay-in to take a 24-7 lead through the first.
The Cougars continued to pull away in the second with stifling pressure defense on the way to a 51-12 halftime advantage.
After both teams initially struggled with turnovers to start the second half, picked off a pass and took it in for a layup.
Trett Yandell later blocked a shot to start a fast break and Thompson found Clayton for a layup, plus the and-one layup.
Clayton got a steal on the next possession before Canadian slowed it down for Thompson to work in the paint for a bucket.
Canadian continued to score the first 14 points of the third before Indianola’s Ben Santine stepped into a left-wing three.
The Cougars rolled to a 72-21 advantage through the third on the way to the win.
